Home Improvement | New Dining Room Patio Furniture and Design ...

Choosing the best dining room patio furniture and design plans will transform your deck into a paradise dining area that everyone wants to come to. And, it can all be done very economically if you follow some really good advice.

If you're like most people, then you don't have a huge budget to work with. Nonetheless, you can get great results if you follow the proper procedures to avoid making any mistakes. It is very important that you figure out who you are and what your actual style is. At the same time, you have to keep in mind that your outdoor dining room is just an extension of your indoor living space. Somehow, they have to match or tie in well together. After that, besides the patio furniture, there are a multitude of things that can be added to increase interest and beauty.

To make the most of the space, pretend that it is a real indoor room. Use the walls just as you would if it was inside by hanging artwork and picture frames. Of course, you'll want to avoid hanging anything they can be damaged by the weather elements. Use fabric just as you would do indoors.

Be a little creative and open up your mind. In a conventional dining room, the fabric would be used over a window. But, in an outdoor space, it can be hung all around to provide more protection from the wind, the sun and some privacy. The fabric can be hung from a canopy or pergola on one side, or on all sides. The only thing you have to ensure is that the fabric of choice ties in with your cushions, the furniture, and the accessories.

It's also important to accessorize your outdoor space using large pieces. These can be sculptures or plants or small trees. Remember to use cushions or throw pillows to add a punch of color. Now it's time to look at lighting. With this element of design, not only will you provide light for a purpose, you will also provide it for other reasons.

For starters, you need good general light that is possibly connected to a dimmer switch for more control. This can come in the form of a chandelier but is not limited to this. Very easily, you can create a specific mood for what ever the event. But don't stop there! Use other sources of light, like wall sconces, candles, and tube lighting. All of these with a little creativity can give you an exquisite space.

With regards to the dining table patio furniture, you'll be happy to know that regardless of your budget, you have a huge selection of materials and styles. For those with bigger budgets, teak might be the solution. The material itself is quite expensive, so it might not be for everyone. If you like the look of teak but don't want to spend that much money on it, you can find similar materials made from less expensive wood. But, these would require protection from the sun and rain to avoid them from damage.

Aside from those, plenty of man-made materials in fantastic styles are readily available to all consumers. Not only do they look good, they feel good and are durable. But, before committing to any one, look around and carefully inspect each set you look at. Your ultimate goal is to end up with a great looking patio that is comfortable and affordable at the same time.

Article by Amdmin2011

If you want to find out how to properly sustain and take care of your vehicle, it is wise to begin by learning more about the several Suzuki Motorcycle Parts first. If you?re not previously aware about CDI ignition and motorcycle stator, then you may find the numerous parts a bit too overwhelming to comprehend. Ensure that you read even further below to find details on the purpose for each and how they might improve your motorcycle?s performance.CDI Ignition:The Capacitor Discharge Ignition is recognized as the best option of automotive electronic ignition system used for several types of automotive engines. It was developed so as to cope with the lengthy charging periods that are very common with high inductance coils. It was first released into the industry around 1980?s and has continued to be very popular today. When utilized on vehicles and motorcycles, the basic principle in the use of a CDI ignition relies on electric induction from the coil to generate electricity that is capable of bursting the spark plug. A conventional CDI module is made up of triggering circuit, charging circuit, main capacitor, along with a small transformer. There are different quantities of energy that every CDI system is capable of storing but many of them are roughly at 50mJ at the very least.Motorcycle Charging System:Motorcycles need to use a battery so as to store electric energy that will be utilized for a number of reasons as well as help the motor to keep running. You need to charge the batteries prior to using it in order that it can perform as it is designed for Honda Motorcycle Parts. The ideal charging requirement for a motorcycle battery is 14.4 Vdc to make sure you have sufficient voltage that could power your vehicle at various speeds.Right now, there are 2 standard ways of charging of motorcycle batteries. The first system is referred to as Permanent Magnet Generator System which uses a winded coper on the motorcycle stator that is responsible for generating power. Meanwhile, the second system is called Field Controlled Generator System. Another system is largely identical to the first one with the sole difference being that it does not use magnet but utilizes an electromagnet instead to produce a magnetic field. This is similar to a car?s charging system.Motorcycle Stator:The stator is a stationary area of the motorcycle?s alternator, which can be complex for newbies to understand so it is crucial to check out the basic electrical system utilized on a motorcycle. It is an important part of any vehicle in order to generate and store electricity that will be utilized afterwards for operating it. Your motorcycle need the alternator to generate AC that will enable the ignition systems, halogen bulbs, and tail lights to turn on. Given that the battery is not capable of storing the AC itself, you have to convert the energy first into DC so it can be stored. You will find several motorcycle stator designs to choose from however they usually have the same fundamental principle Ducati Motorcycle Parts. Moving a magnet past a coil allows the coil to produce a burst of electricity. You must choose a stator based on the length and amount of winding components, though that in itself will change depending on your motorcycle?s power requirements to deliver maximum power output. Now you may utilize this information on CDI ignition and aftermarket motorcycle parts, particularly if you?ll want to spend on a replacement for such motorcycle components. If you?re not sure regarding how to go about the buying process, you can seek guidance from an automotive shop worker so you can make the proper investment.

TC@MWC: Hands-On With The HTC One S

ones4The HTC One X is clearly the device everyone wants to see, which is why I decided to give its little brother a bit of spotlight first. The One S is sort of a puzzle to me. Though it's meant to be more of a mid-range device than the powerhouse that is the HTC One X, the One S sports an arguably handsomer exterior. Unlike its polycarbonate-clad counterpart, the One S sports a frame made from single piece of aluminum, which imbues it with a more robust, premium feel despite its light weight and slim (7.9mm!) frame. Much as I like the One X, I think there's a very real chance that the One S will ultimately be the real leader of the pack when it comes to popularity.

Obama sings the blues with Mick Jagger, B.B. King (+video)

President Obama took the microphone Tuesday to sing a few bars of 'Sweet Home Chicago' during a blues concert at the White House. Are Mick Jagger and B.B. King in danger of being upstaged? You decide.

"Let the Good Times Roll".... "The Thrill is Gone".... "Sweet Home Chicago." A Republican recipe for ending Barack Obama?s presidency after one term? Not quite. It was blues night at the White House, and those were on the play list.

More important, B.B. King was in the house, and when Mick Jagger (yes, that Mick Jagger) handed President Obama the microphone Tuesday night, that was all it took to get the First Crooner to belt out a few bars with the King of the Blues (see video below).

Buddy Guy, another legendary blues man in attendance, told Mr. Obama he?d heard about the president singing a little Al Green recently and added, ?You gotta keep it up,? according to the Associated Press.

The concert, timed for Black History Month, was the latest in the ?In Performance at the White House" series and will air Monday on PBS. This one is called ?Red, White and Blues.?

Also performing: Trombone Shorty, Jeff Beck, Shemekia Copeland, Susan Tedeschi, Gary Clark Jr., Keb? Mo?, Derek Trucks, and Warren Haynes.

Set list

1. ?Let the Good Times Roll? (Ensemble)

2. ?The Thrill Is Gone? (B.B King)

3. ?St. James Infirmary? (Trombone Shorty)

4. ?Let Me Love You Baby? (Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck)

5. ?Brush With The Blues? instrumental (Jeff Beck)

6. ?I Can?t Turn You Loose? (Mick Jagger)

7. ?Commit A Crime? (Mick Jagger, Jeff Beck)

8. ?Miss You? (Mick Jagger, Shemekia Copeland, Susan Tedeschi)

Ex-Fiesta Bowl top executive enters guilty plea

FILE - In this Dec. 28, 2009 file photo, Boise State coach Chris Petersen, left, is greeted by Fiesta Bowl president John Junker, right, after Petersen disembarked off a charter flight at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix. (AP Photo/Paul Connors, File)

(AP) ? The Fiesta Bowl's former top executive pleaded guilty Tuesday to a felony charge stemming from a political donations scandal that nearly jeopardized the bowl's role as a regular host of college football's national championship game.

John Junker entered the plea in Phoenix for his role in soliciting political contributions from Fiesta Bowl employees, a development that will likely help federal and state investigations into the scheme.

A 276-page bowl investigation report found the "apparent scheme" to reimburse at least $46,539 for employees' political contributions. It also reported lavish spending by Junker.

The bowl organization later reimbursed employees for the donations, which were made over a nine-year period.

The scandal led to the firing last year of Junker, the bowl's longtime leader, and the resignation of Natalie Wisneski, the bowl's chief operating officer. Wisneski was indicted in November on federal charges in the scandal. She has pleaded not guilty.

The Fiesta Bowl organization was spared the worst sanctions ? the loss of the championship game, which it hosts every four years, and its NCAA license.

Two other bowl officials, Peggy Eyanson and Jay Fields, entered pleas Tuesday to misdemeanors in the case.

As part of their deal with Arizona prosecutors, Junker, Eyanson and Fields will not face any further criminal charges or civil lawsuits from the state. They must also cooperate with the state's continued investigation into the scandal.

"There is an ongoing investigation, and it involves other potential targets," Attorney General Tom Horne said at a news conference following the hearing.

Horne said he couldn't discuss the investigation or name any other target.

Bowl lobbyist Gary Husk has also been the focus of federal and state criminal investigations. An independent investigation found that he participated in and coordinated the political donations reimbursement scheme.

Husk hasn't been charged with any crimes and has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer, Rick Romley, released a statement Tuesday calling Junker's plea "the same pattern of self-serving behavior he showed for years" as the leader of the bowl.

"The buck never stops with Junker," Romley said. "As the CEO of a community-based, nonprofit organization, John created a culture of deceit that allowed him to misuse upwards of $4.5 million."

Junker pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court to a state felony, which can carry up to a 2 1/2-year prison sentence. He was reserved during the hearing, answering the judge's questions quietly and bowing his head for much of the time the judge addressed him. He will be sentenced on April 26.

Eyanson and Fields each pleaded guilty to one count of making a prohibited campaign contribution. Both were sentenced to a year's probation and must pay a fine of at least $2,500.

Fields is the former vice president of marketing for the organization. Eyanson is the director of business operations, and still works for the Fiesta Bowl.

Nathan Hochman, an attorney for the organization, said the Fiesta Bowl has full confidence in Eyanson because she cooperated with investigators and admitted wrongdoing early on.

Though Eyanson had to pay a price for it, "she went out of her way to fully and truthfully disclose what happened," Hochman said.

Neither Junker nor his lawyer, Stephen Dichter, was available for comment after the hearing.

"Pursuant to plea agreements with the prosecuting agencies involved, Mr. Junker will continue his ongoing cooperation with them and their agents, as requested," Dichter said in a statement released Sunday. "No additional charges arising out of Mr. Junker's long tenure with the Fiesta Bowl will be brought against him by either the State of Arizona or the United States Attorney for the District of Arizona."

Junker plans to plead guilty to another felony charge in federal court, Dichter said in the statement. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office on Tuesday declined to confirm or deny a deal has been reached.

The Arizona Republic first reported the plea deal in Sunday's editions. The newspaper began reporting in late 2009 that the bowl had been involved in coordinating donations to politicians.

An initial bowl review found no evidence of that, but it later called for an independent investigation. The results, released last March, led to the ouster of Junker and Wisneski.

Three months after Junker was fired, the bowl hired University of Arizona president Robert Shelton to lead the organization and repair its reputation.

"The Fiesta Bowl is bigger than a few individuals and has gained its stellar reputation through the hard work of thousands of honest volunteers over the last 40 years," bowl Chairman of the Board Duane Woods said in a statement posted on the organization's website on Tuesday.

The bowl is cooperating with the state attorney general's office, and has taken steps to ensure the law will not be broken again, Woods said.

Will Our Senior Loved Ones Accept Home ... - Senior Care Corner

Home automation is going to give our senior loved ones the ability to live in their homes more safely, enjoyably and comfortably, many well into their elder years.

Home monitoring using video and motion detectors is going to give family members and other caregivers peace of mind, knowing the seniors about whom we care are safe and well ? and that they?ll get notification quickly if not.

The exhibition floor at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) included many devices and systems that carry the promise of letting seniors live independently at home, often without the need for regular caregiver support, for longer than previously thought practical.

Not only is living out our lives in the home of our choice, known as aging in place, a desire of many adults but it is also typically a far less expensive way to live than in senior living facilities. With savings and retirement plans strained and the future fate of Social Security uncertain, being less expensive is an added attraction of aging in place.

So, all is great, right ? or is it?

Despite doubts expressed by some family members and some ?experts?, we expect most seniors will eventually not only accept but also embrace home technology that makes life more comfortable and enjoyable. After all, the next set of surveys is likely to show that a majority of seniors are online, using computers, smartphones and tablets to surf the web, use social media and much more. Also, the senior population includes a growing number of boomers. While they didn?t grow up with technology in the same way as younger generations, the technology grew up with the boomers.

When it comes to in-home monitoring technology, will our senior loved ones embrace, accept or even tolerate it? Will we when our time comes?

Home technology can and will be able to give family caregivers peace of mind by letting them know that

  • mom is getting out of bed each day,
  • grandpa is going into the kitchen to eat, or
  • the senior loved one developing Alzheimer?s is not wandering out of the house alone.

That same technology, though, may also be seen by senior loved ones as intruding on their privacy and taking away their independence in a way that even a live-in caregiver might not. Sleeping late because you socialized late the night before or not wanting lunch because you had a big breakfast are not indications of problems, but may draw questions from your family because the monitoring system was triggered.

Both would be seeing the same thing, of course, but from different perspectives. Who?s right? If the objective is to improve the lives of senior loved ones, we hope THEY feel their lives have been improved. That means we have to put ourselves in their shoes and seek technology solutions that can be embraced.

What?s the solution? Certainly there will be cases where the well being of a senior loved one outweighs what they want, but maybe that step can be avoided with efforts up front. After all, remote controls, computers, cell phones and other devices were all new to them at some point and have been embraced by most.

We care enough to want to do it right.

Coming next, potential steps to get senior loved ones to embrace monitoring technology. Check back here or sign up for our updates so you don?t miss it.

The international system of units (SI) is the most widely used system of measurement for commerce and science. It comprises seven base units (metre, kilogram, second, Kelvin, ampere, mole and candela). Ideally these should be stable over time and universally reproducible, which requires definitions based on fundamental constants of nature. The kilogram is the only unit still defined by a physical artifact.

In October 2011, the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) agreed that the kilogram should be redefined in terms of Planck's constant (h). It deferred a final decision until there was sufficient consistent and accurate data to agree a value for h. This paper describes how this can be done with the required level of certainty. It provides a measured value of h and extensive analysis of possible uncertainties that can arise during experimentation. Although these results alone are not enough, consistent results from other measurement institutes using the techniques and technology described in this paper will provide an even more accurate consensus value and a change to the way the world measures mass possibly as soon as 2014.

Planck's constant is a fundamental constant of nature which relates the frequency (colour) of a particle of light (a photon) to its energy. By using two quantum mechanical effects discovered in the last 60 years: the Josephson effect and the quantum Hall effect, electrical power can be measured in terms of Planck's constant (and time).

A piece of kit called the watt balance - first proposed by Brian Kibble at the National Physical Laboratory in 1975 - relates electrical power to mechanical power. This allows it to make very accurate measurements of Planck's constant in terms of the SI units of mass, length and time. The SI units of length and time are already fixed in terms of fundamental and atomic constants. If the value of h is fixed, the watt balance would provide a method of measuring mass.

Dr Ian Robinson, who leads the project at the National Physical Laboratory, explains how the watt balance works: "The watt balance divides its measurement into two parts to avoid the errors which would arise if real power was measured. The principal can be illustrated by considering a loudspeaker placed on its back. Placing a mass on the cone will push it downwards and it can be restored to its former position by passing a current through the speaker coil. The ratio of the force generated by the current is fixed for a particular loudspeaker coil and magnet and is measured in the second part of the experiment by moving the speaker cone and measuring the ratio of the voltage produced at the speaker terminals to the velocity of the cone.

When the results of the two parts of the experiment are combined, the product of voltage and current (electrical power) is equated to the product of weight and velocity (mechanical power) and the properties of the loudspeaker coil and magnet are eliminated, leaving a measurement of the weight of the mass which is independent of the particular speaker used."

Measurements of h using watt balances have provided uncertainties approaching the two parts in one hundred million level, which is required to base the kilogram on Planck's constant. Thanks to improvements highlighted in the paper published today, measurements at the National Research Council in Canada, which is now using the NPL equipment, look set to provide considerably greater accuracy.

Another set of data comes from NIST, the USA's measurement institute. Currently the watt balance at NIST is showing slightly different results and the differences are being investigated. If the results are found to be consistent, it will be the start of the end for the physical kilogram.

A Planck based kilogram would mean a universal standard that could be replicated anywhere at any time. It will also bring much greater long-term certainty to scientists who rely on the SI for precise measurements, or on h itself. The watt balance would provide a means of realising and disseminating the redefined unit of mass.

Dr Robinson concludes: "This is an example of British science leading the world. NPL invented the watt balance and has produced an apparatus and measurements which will contribute to the redefinition. The apparatus is now being used by Canada to continue the work, and we anticipate their results will have lower uncertainties than we achieved, and the principle is used by the US and other laboratories around the world to make their own measurements."

"This research will underpin the world's measurement system and ensure the long term stability of the very top level of mass measurement. Although the man on the street won't see much difference - you'll still get the same 1kg bag of potatoes these standards will ultimately be used to calibrate the world's weighing systems, from accurate scientific instruments, right down the chain to domestic scales."

The paper: Toward the redefinition of the kilogram: A measurement of the Planck constant using the NPL Mark II watt balance is published in Metrologia, the leading international measurement science journal, published by IOP Publishing on behalf of Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM).

New research, published by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), takes a significant step towards changing the international definition of the kilogram which is currently based on a lump of platinum-iridium kept in Paris. NPL has produced technology capable of accurate measurements of Planck's constant, the final piece of the puzzle in moving from a physical object to a kilogram based on fundamental constants of nature. Motor Impairments Appear to Be a ... - Health Nutrition and Fitness

Study suggests that the disorder itself may be behind patients? difficulty with physical skills.

FRIDAY, Feb. 17 (HealthDay News) ? Autism itself seems to be responsible for the problems children with the disorder have in developing motor skills such as running, throwing a ball and learning to write, according to a new study.

Previously, it wasn?t clear whether these motor skill difficulties ran in families or were linked to autism, said the researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

The investigators studied children from 67 families that had at least one child with autism spectrum disorder and a sibling in the same age group. Twenty-nine families had two children with autism, including six identical twins, and 48 families had only one child with the disorder.

The children were asked to perform a range of motor skills, including push-ups, running, throwing a ball, placing pegs in a pegboard, imitating movements, cutting with scissors and copying forms.

The test results showed that 83 percent of the children with an autism spectrum disorder were below average in motor skills, while their siblings without the disorder generally scored in the normal range, according to the study released online in advance of publication in an upcoming print issue of the journal Autism.

Identical twins had similar scores. Non-twin siblings who each had autism had similar scores. But scores were markedly different in sibling pairs in which one child had autism and the other did not, the researchers found.

?From our results, it looks like motor impairments may be part of the autism diagnosis, rather than a trait genetically carried in the family,? lead author Claudia List Hilton, an assistant professor in occupational therapy and an instructor in psychiatry, said in a university news release. ?That suggests that motor impairments are a core characteristic of the diagnosis.?

And, she said, ?the data suggests that genes play a role in the motor impairments observed in those with autism spectrum disorder. This is further evidence that autism spectrum disorder is a largely genetic disorder.?

Among children with autism, the lower their motor skills? score, the greater their degree of social impairment and severity of autism.

?Kids who have difficulty with motor skills might have trouble with what we think are simple things like brushing their teeth, buttoning, snapping or starting a zipper ? things that are so basic to being independent, but would cause other problems at school,? Hilton said. ?They would need to have an aide or someone helping them, and that would set them off as different from the other kids.?

While the study uncovered an association between autism and motor impairments, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

Bridal Shower

The bridal shower is definitely an chance for the bride-to-be to celebrate the upcoming marriage. It?s also an excellent occasion for family and friends to hold a party. That?s the reason it?s probably the most popular party suggestions for adults. Usually, the bride to be and her family and friends arrange for the details of the party with the bride making the ultimate decision becasue it is basically her party.

It is essential to determine is what type of theme it?s going to be. This is a party concerning the hopes and dreams which come from being married. Various themes that could work include diamonds, lace, and anything to do with the wedding. Just remember it?s a time to celebrate the upcoming marriage.

Birthday Party

The birthday party is very important for children and kids at heart to celebrate. It?s an excuse for children of all ages to have fun. That?s why it?s one of the best party ideas for children. An important aspect of the party is to possess a theme. The theme might be something that the birthday boy or girl likes. Or it could be a general theme for an individual that?s older.

A child who likes dinosaurs ought to have a dinosaur themed birthday party. That can make sure that the party feels special towards the child. For teens and adults, a general theme may be better. For instance, a Hawaiian luau theme might be quite appropriate for older teens and adults. Hawaiian drinks and Hawaiian BBQ foods can be used to solidify the theme in the party.

Baby Shower

The baby shower is a great time to celebrate the coming of a new child. But it?s a legitimate time for the mother to celebrate. It?s one of the best party suggestions for an expecting mother. The main thing in setting up a baby shower would be to pick the right theme. That will depend on the guests that?ll be coming.

Even though classic baby theme is extremely favored by many mothers, it is also OK to choose various other general party themes as well. There is no reasons why a Hawaiian themed party couldn?t be a baby shower. It will still be fun for everybody involved. Basically, whoever is setting up the party should ask the expecting mother what she wants.

Fourth of July Party

This can be a day of celebration during the summer. Which means it?s one of the best party ideas for the summer. Where Memorial Day was obviously a day of reflection, the Fourth of July is much more right for a party. The good thing is that school is out, so family and friends of every age group have the time to travel to the party.

Obviously, it is critical to pick themes that have the colors red, white, and blue so that everyone remembers why there is a party. A good time to schedule the party is prior to any evening fireworks show. If one lives close enough to a firework display, it may be great to sit outside while viewing the fireworks show from a distance. Remember the party will also need BBQ food, juice, soda, and beer so that everyone enjoys themselves on America?s birthday party.

David is very experiencedwith party ideas. He has been producing it for many years. Bridal shower favors is at his list in which he can help you on what?s the right way to go.

All About Airline Travel and Domestic pets | World Hotels Travel

In the event you travel by air in the future? If you do, are you a pet owner who has to bring your pet along with you? Although many people leave our pets in the home, you may not want to do so maybe purpose for travel might be to move, as opposed to taking a fun filled vacation. Regardless of your reasons behind wanting or needing to travel with your pet or pets, there are many of important points that you will need to keep in mind.

The first step in traveling with a pet is to make sure that you are capable of doing so. Although a good number of airlines allows pets on their planes, not every will. You may be in a predicament if you are planning to depart from a small airport with just one or two airlines. If they do not accept pets or maybe if their rules and restrictions are extremely much for you to handle, you?ll want to examine other nearby airports, specially those that are larger in size.

When you are traveling by air with your pet or pets, it is important to remember that you will be charged an additional fee. Unfortunately, many new pet travelers believe that they?re able to use their pets in addition to their pet carriers to count towards as being a carry-on bag or a checked bag. It is not how it works though. You will, almost always, be charged an extra fee for traveling with a pet. This extra fee may depend on the airline involved and well as your pet?s location, including in the cabin or in the luggage compartment.

That leads to another important point. Despite some of the airlines that allow pets, like animals, aboard their flights, not all allow pets to be in the cabin with passengers. This is particularly common on small planes where allergies may be a big concern. If you cannot part with your pet, be sure to search for an airline that will permit you to keep him or her in the cabin with you. With that said, keep in mind that the size of your pet will also play a tremendous factor in your options.

Regardless of where your dog is stored for the plane ride, you need to have a pet carrier or crate on their behalf. Many airlines have specific rules and restrictions on the type can be used. Resections often include materials used, in addition to size. Most will provide you with that information when asked. These are pet crates and carriers, it is very important make sure that you give your pet enough room to stand and move around a little bit. In reality, most airlines will refuse to transport pets that they can feel are unsafe from small pet crates and carriers.

It is usually important to make sure that you get your pet checked by their vet. You should make sure that your pet has all required vaccinations and that they are fit for travel. Also, all airlines require that you get a health certificate, which will declare that your pet is healthy and safe for travel.

The aforementioned points are just a few of the many who you will want to take into consideration when traveling using a pet. Added tips include booking direct flights, making sure your pet?s collar is marked with all the proper identification, as well as their pet carrier.

Nigerian president's state votes amid tight security (Reuters)

YENAGOA, Nigeria (Reuters) ? Nigerians voted amid tight security in a governorship election on Saturday in President Goodluck Jonathan's restive and oil-rich home state of Bayelsa, where last week militants attacked a major oil pipeline.

Nigeria's 36 state governors are some of the most powerful politicians in Africa's most populous nation, in some cases controlling budgets larger than other African countries and gubernatorial elections can stoke violence.

At least one person was killed and several injured at a pre-election rally on Tuesday in the southern Ijaw region in Bayelsa, witnesses said.

"Ten thousand to 15,000 policemen are deployed for the election, these include anti-bomb squads from Delta, Edo and Rivers states to ensure that all key points are saved," said Chris Olakpe, Bayelsa's police commissioner.

"We are going to effectively police all polling booths and normal patrols would go on to ensure miscreants do not hijack the process," added Olakpe, who took up his position this week.

Even with a huge police and military presence it will be difficult to guard all ballot boxes in Bayelsa, where thousands of kilometers (miles) of labyrinthine creeks weave through swamplands, sitting on top of billions of dollars of crude oil.

"Soldiers, police are all over so I'm hopeful there will be no problem of shooting, killing, burning of houses and all that," said John Masi, a 35-year old laborer.

"I want the new governor that will be elected today to quickly construct the new university so I can get work to do and make money to get out of this wooden shack and have a better life for my wife and two children."

Bayelsa is one of the three Nigerian states that make up the oil rich Niger Delta, where militant gangs held the government to ransom for years by sabotaging pipelines and stealing industrial amounts of oil until an amnesty in 2009.

Attacks have been rarer and less destructive since the amnesty but they still occur. Last week the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), formerly Nigeria's main militant threat, claimed a strike on a pipeline owned by Italian firm Eni, which confirmed 4,000 barrels per day of output had been cut by the attack.

MILITANTS

Under the amnesty thousands of militants gave up their weapons, joined training schemes and drew stipends. Security sources say remaining gangs in the Niger Delta do not have the capacity to do the damage seen in the past, which at its height cut more than a third of the OPEC-member's output.

Several false threats purporting to be from MEND have been sent in the past and recent damage caused to Nigeria's oil infrastructure has been done by gangs stealing oil for illicit refining and sale, rather than the result of militant strikes.

Diplomats and security sources have said violence in the Niger Delta is often stoked by rival politicians and the race for the Bayelsa governorship post has been fierce.

Nigeria's Supreme Court removed Governor Timipre Sylva from his post last month because it said his tenure should have expired, replacing him with Bayelsa's speaker of the house of assembly.

The dominant ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) didn't allow Sylva to run in its primary last November, the first time the PDP has stopped a sitting governor from seeking a second term. Thousands of soldiers were then deployed to Bayelsa, prompting outrage from Sylva's team.

The winner of that primary, Henry Dickson, is the clear favorite to win Saturday's vote. President Jonathan is backing Dickson and is traveling from the capital Abuja to his home state to cast his vote, the presidency said.

Western diplomats said Sylva was snubbed because he fell out with his former ally Jonathan. Sylva will not run in the election but is seeking to nullify the most recent PDP primary, hoping to revert back to the primary he won last year.

Bayelsa has a population of around 1.5 million, the least populous state in a country of more than 160 million but it is key to Nigeria's economy due to its substantial oil wealth.

Beyonce and Jay-Z To Trademark Blue Ivy Carter?s Name

New parents Beyonce and Jay-Z are looking to trademark their baby girl?s name. Can you imagine having your name trademarked, me neither but then again my parents aren’t B & J either. In a move that most parents wouldn?t even think of doing Beyonce and Jay-Z have filed papers with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark their first child?s name, Blue Ivy Carter. For those of thinking the parents are being over the top, just keep reading and you will totally understand where they are coming from. If you think this is a rather drastic move, well apparently it isn?t. Turns out a couple of days after the famous couple welcomed their baby girl a couple of designers tried to get their hands on the now famous name. According to Gossip Cop designer Joseph Mbeh filed an application for ?Blue Ivy Carter NYC? on January 11th and then on January 18th a unknown but separate entity filed paperwork for a fragrance to be called ?Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV?. Both of those very lame attempts were denied because well the name belongs to the child of one of the most famous couples in the world. Seriously did these [...]

No. 10 Duke stuns No. 5 North Carolina 85-84 (AP)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Austin Rivers and his Duke teammates kept hanging around, doing just enough to keep North Carolina from blowing the game open until the Tar Heels finally gave them an opening.

The freshman took advantage, burying a shot that will live on in the lore of this fierce rivalry.

Rivers hit a 3-pointer at the horn to give the No. 10 Blue Devils an 85-84 win over the fifth-ranked Tar Heels on Wednesday night, snapping the UNC's school-record 31-game home winning streak.

Rivers scored a season-high 29 points and hit six 3s, the last over 7-footer Tyler Zeller with the Blue Devils (20-4, 7-2) trailing by two in the final seconds. The ball swished through the net, sending Rivers running down the court in celebration while the rest of his teammates gave chase before mobbing him in front of a stunned UNC crowd.

Rivers' 3 also sent his father, Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers, into jubilant celebration from the stands. And it capped a wild rally for the Blue Devils from 10 down in the final 2 1/2 minutes.

"Obviously this is my favorite win I've ever had in my entire life," Rivers said. "And it's because we were down the whole game. The whole game, we were down. They just kept it on us ? 10-point lead, 10-point lead. And then there was 3 minutes left and probably everybody thought we were going to lose, and we just kept fighting. To get a W, it's amazing."

Harrison Barnes scored 25 points for the Tar Heels (20-4, 7-2), while Zeller finished with 23 points and 11 rebounds. But Zeller had just four points in the second half and missed two free throws in the final minute, including one with 13.9 seconds left that set up Rivers' winner.

It was a finish befitting the rivalry, from Rivers' shot to Barnes' second-half surge to a strange play in which Zeller accidentally batted the ball into the Duke basket on a rebound attempt to bring the Blue Devils within a point with 14.2 seconds left after trailing all second half.

"They're really good and they can knock you out," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "And we didn't get knocked out. And as a result, we hung in there and we won the last round. I'm not sure we won the whole fight, but the last round, we did, and we won the game. But we fought the entire time. We fought a really good fight."

North Carolina charged out of halftime to build a 13-point lead and seemed in control. But the Tar Heels never could land the finishing blow to a Duke team that had looked a bit lost in recent weeks, including its own crushing loss to Florida State on a last-second 3-pointer that snapped a 45-game winning streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 21.

Duke was coming off an overtime home loss to Miami over the weekend, but the Blue Devils ? and Rivers, in particular ? played with plenty of confidence all night against the Tar Heels. They shot 44 percent and matched a season high with 14 3-pointers.

And with Florida State's loss at Boston College earlier Wednesday, the Blue Devils, Tar Heels and Seminoles are all tied again atop the ACC standings.

"We believe in our players, we believe in our coaching staff and they believe in us," said Ryan Kelly, who had 15 points for Duke. "Not everything went perfectly, but when it came down to it, we made the biggest play."

From the start, the Blue Devils seemed determined to rely on the 3-point shot to offset the Tar Heels' dominance inside. They hit plenty early and led by eight in the first half, then cooled off as the Tar Heels charged out of halftime.

In the end, however, the Blue Devils' shooters warmed up just in time to stop North Carolina's long home winning streak.

"It really hurts just because of how we played the whole game," said UNC's John Henson, who had 12 points and 17 rebounds. "For us in the last three minutes just to give it up like that is really depressing."

Rivers finished with a Duke freshman scoring record against UNC. Seth Curry added 15 points, including a 3 that made it 82-78 with 1:48 left.

Then Kelly followed with a jumper off his own missed 3 that closed the gap to 82-80. Then, after Zeller hit a free throw, Kelly launched a long shot that appeared to be a 3 over Henson. As the ball was falling short of the rim, Zeller tried for the rebound but accidentally deflected the ball up and into the basket to cut the deficit to 83-82.

Zeller got caught on a switch defending Rivers on the final possession and said he should've played him closer.

"I knew he was going to shoot a 3," Barnes said. "I thought everyone in the gym knew. Z did a good job of contesting, but he made the shot."

Then again, North Carolina probably never should've let it come to that.

After trailing most of the first half, the Tar Heels ran off a 14-4 run to start the second half. Barnes didn't have a field goal in the first half while playing on his sore left ankle, but he finally got going with a pair of baskets followed by a 3-pointer off a crosscourt pass from Kendall Marshall for a 57-44 lead with 15:08 left.

North Carolina maintained at least a seven-point lead until those final minutes, with Barnes' last jumper giving the Tar Heels an 82-72 lead with 2:38 left.

North Carolina shot 59 percent in the second half, but went just 8 for 15 from the foul line after halftime to let this one slip painfully away.

"This one hurts," UNC coach Roy Williams said. "The kids really played and competed and did some very good things."
