Your Chicago: Museum Of Broadcast Communications ? CBS Chicago

A display at Chicago?s Museum of Broadcast Communications is dedicated to the first televised presidential debate. (CBS)

CHICAGO (CBS) ? One of Chicago?s newest museums pays homage to the history of radio and television.

For Kathie Cnota, visiting the Museum of Broadcast Communications at State and Kinzie is an opportunity to take a walk down memory lane. It houses a treasure trove of memorabilia.

?The nostalgia of looking at all of pictures, all of the memories it brings back, just reliving all of that,? she says of the appeal.

There are plenty of pictures. There?s the comedy wing, and not far away, some of the finest dramatic actors of all time. The MBC was the vision of broadcaster Bruce DuMont, who?s now the museum?s president and CEO.

?I was working at Channel 2 30 years ago, producing The Lee Phillip Show, and I saw the way tape were being handled ? not terribly well organized, and so it bothered me that historical moments were not being preserved,? DuMont tells CBS 2?s Rob Johnson.

Historical moments like the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debate at the old CBS 2 studios. The recreation at the museum is DuMont?s favorite display.

Cnota?s favorite display is that of 1950?s TV pioneer Mary Hartline, one of the first TV stars to be heavily merchandised. But beyond the 85,000 hours of tape, there is an interactive section to teach the younger set about evolution of TV.

?I think it?s important to be able to see where we came from in technology as to where we are now because it?s happened over all of these years and we just kind of take it for granted,? Cnota says.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It?s $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $6 for children 4 to 12 years old.

Failure? Hardly. Chevy Volt outsells half of all US cars.

Chevy Volt sales figures this year are higher than roughly half of the 260 or so car models sold in the US.

By John Voelcker,?Guest blogger / September 22, 2012

A 2012 Chevy Volt electric car is seen at the sixth annual Alternative Transportation Expo and Conference (AltCar) in Santa Monica, California in this 2011 file photo. The debate over the Volt rages on, but the plugin hybrid moved more units than half of the car models sold in the United States this year.

With the Chevrolet Volt racking up the highest sales last month since it launched--though the numbers were helped by incentives for both buyers and dealers--some of the "Volt is a flop" coverage has abated.

Now, a post on the fan site GM-Volt.com points out that this so-called "sales failure" has higher sales to date this year than roughly half of the other 260 or so models sold in the U.S.

The post responded to an article yesterday on Forbes, "Notwithstanding GM's Protests, No One Wants the Volt," written by the director of science at the Cato Institute, a libertarian think-tank in Washington, D.C.

The GM-Volt.com post simply lists sales totals through August of every vehicle that logged fewer deliveries than the Volt's 13,497.

The aggregated sales data can be found here, among other venues. The Volt is # 133 out of the 262 models listed, though the sales data are hardly linear: The top vehicles sell tens to thousands of times the volume of those at the bottom of the list.

The highest-selling cars are the Toyota Camry (280,536 plus another 30,587 Camry Hybrids), Honda Accord (218,665), and Honda Civic (212,483 plus another 5,168 Civic Hybrids). No surprise there.

And granted, some of the cars outsold by the Volt are predictably low-volume models. No one expects expensive sports cars like the Nissan GT-R (849) or the Lexus LFA (29) to do better than the Volt.

Moreover, GM executives made rash projections of the number of Volts they planned to sell in 2011 (15,000) and 2012 (45,000) they they've now had to walk back.

Still, a number of the models that delivered fewer cars than the Volt are surprising.

Would you have expected the Volt to outsell both the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes-Benz S Class, Lincoln's large sedan, the MKS, for example--not to mention the mid-size Audi A6? It did.

Then there are the several hybrids it beat, including the Lexus RX 400h and CT 200h, and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid.

Even more impressive, it beat every single hybrid model sold by BMW, Cadillac, Ford, Honda, Kia, GMC, Infiniti, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen.

The only hybrids it didn't outsell, in fact, were the Toyota Prius, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

For context, we like the data from this past January, when total 2011 sales figures revealed that the Chevy Volt and the Nissan Leaf each sold more units in their first year on the market than did the Toyota Prius hybrid back in 2000, its first year.

Now, even the GM reporter at Automotive News has suggested that the incentives to move more Volts are a good thing for GM, for plug-in cars as a whole, and for the industry's move toward greener cars.

In other words: Don't believe everything you read about "failure."

Obese children have less sensitive taste-buds than those of normal weight

Friday, September 21, 2012

Obese kids have less sensitive taste-buds than kids of normal weight, indicates research published online in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

This blunted ability to distinguish all five tastes of bitter, sweet, salty, sour, and umami (savoury) may prompt them to eat larger quantities of food in a bid to register the same taste sensation, suggest the authors.

They base their findings on 94 normal weight and 99 obese children aged between 6 and 18, who were in good health and not taking any medications known to affect taste and smell.

The taste sensitivity of every child was tested using 22 "taste strips" placed on the tongue, to include each of the five taste sensations, at four different levels of intensity, plus two blank strips.

Each child was asked to refrain from eating or drinking anything other than water and not to chew gum for at least an hour before they took the two tests, which involved identifying the different tastes and their intensity.

The sum of all five taste sensations at the four different intensities allowed for a maximum score of 20, with scores ranging from two to 19.

Girls and older children were better at picking out the right tastes.

Overall, the children were best able to differentiate between sweet and salty, but found it hardest to distinguish between salty and sour, and between salty and umami.

And obese children found it significantly more difficult to identify the different taste sensations, scoring an average of 12.6 compared with an average of just over 14 clocked up by children of normal weight.

Obese children were significantly less likely to identify the individual taste sensations correctly, particularly salty, umami, and bitter.

And while both obese and normal weight children correctly identified all the differing levels of sweetness, obese kids rated three out of the four intensity levels lower than kids of normal weight.

Similarly, children of normal weight were better able to distinguish the different taste sensations, the older they were, but this trend was not seen among the obese children.

Exactly why people have differing taste perceptions is unclear, but genes, hormones, acculturation and exposure to different tastes early in life are all thought to play a part, say the authors.

But previous research indicates that heightened sensitivity to different taste sensations may help to reduce the amount of food eaten as less is required to get the same "taste hit."

How To Laser Target Your Prospects With Facebook Ads | The Daily ...

  • The Daily Egg
  • How To Laser Target Your Prospects With Facebook Ads
by Adam Kreitman 09/20/2012

It?s popular to trash Facebook these days.

Its stock price has fallen to record lows, billionaires are dumping their stock, big companies are abandoning their paid advertising campaigns and there have even been doubts raised about the legitimacy of Likes companies get from their FB ads.

Certainly Facebook advertising isn?t going to work for everyone. As I wrote about a few months back, it?s very difficult to get direct sales from Facebook ads. But, depending on the kind of business you?re in and your strategy, FB ads can and do work.

What Facebook has going for it that no other company can match is an incredibly rich amount of demographic data about their users. From the information you put in your profile to your Likes to the web pages you visit, Facebook has compiled the most accurate and complete demographic profiling information available to most advertisers.

So, let?s focus on the positive here!

In this article we?re going to look at how demographic targeting on Facebook works and three real world examples to see how different businesses can use Facebook to laser target their prospects.

How To Target Your Prospects on Facebook

When trying to reach your target demographic on Facebook, there are a number of the usual options you?d expect?Age, Gender, Education, Location (Country, State, City, Zip Code), etc.

And while that?s all well and good, where things really get interesting is in the more advanced demographic and interest targeting options. Here you can target people by their likes and interests either through Broad Category Targeting or Precise Interest Targeting.

Broad Category Targeting

With Broad Category Targeting, you check off pre-set groups from a list of categories Facebook has compiled. Here are some of examples of the groups you can target within these broad categories:

  • Activities: Cooking, Gaming(Social/Online), Gardening, Photography
  • Family Status: Away From Home, Baby Boomers, Engaged, Expecting Parents, Parents (child: 4-12yrs)
  • Interests: Charity/Causes, Health & Well-being, Home & Garden, Pets (Cats), Pets (Dogs), Politics (US Non-Partisans)
  • Retail/Shopping: Beauty Products, Consumer Electronics, Fashion, Luxury Goods

Precise Interest Targeting

With Precise Interest Targeting, you type in keywords and Facebook will come up with a list of related likes and interests you can use to target prospects. Here?s an example where I type in the keyword ?entrepreneur??

With Precise Interest Targeting, you can type anything from names of brands, movies, books and TV shows to activities such as home schooling, baseball and crocheting to occupations/job titles such as lawyers, engineers, CEOs. And much more!

To get a better sense of how this all targeting can work, let?s look at some real world examples.

I?ve picked out 2 real businesses and 1 ?generic? politician (to keep things non-partisan!) and have come up with suggestions of different targeting options they could use to reach prospects through Facebook ads. (Note: None of these are clients of mine and I have no connection to, or insider knowledge of, their businesses).

Example 1 ? ikram Clothing Store

ikram is a high end women?s clothing store in Chicago.

When targeting an affluent, fashion conscious market the easiest way to do so on Facebook Ads is through the Broad category options of ?Fashion? and ?Luxury Goods?.

If we were to target Facebook users who fall in those categories and live within 10 miles of Chicago, we get an audience of 1,041,400 people. That?s a pretty big group and it?s often better to more finely slice and dice things for optimal results.

One way to do that is to limit your demographics by age and gender. Since ikram sells women?s clothing, it makes sense to target women with their ads (though they could run ads to men promoting ikram as a place to get memorable, unique gifts for spouses or girlfriends).

ikram could also narrow the age range to target women 35 and older (who are likely to have more disposable income).

Another trick I?ve used in campaigns targeting more affluent customers is to set the Education targeting option to ?College Grad.? By targeting college grads (as with targeting an older demographic), you tend to reach a more affluent group.

Instead of targeting the Broad Interest categories of Fashion and Luxury Goods, ikram could also switch to Precise Interest Targeting and use keywords that their customer base likes.

For example, they could target?

  • Larger, high end fashion stores like Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus
  • High end fashion brands like Louis Vuitton, Giorgio Armani and Coco Chanel
  • High end brands (not necessarily related to fashion) like BMW, Lexus and Lancome.

While ikram can certainly target Facebook users across Chicago, having some campaigns that target users in more affluent cities like Naperville, Highland Park or Lake Forest could work well.

Also, there are affluent neighborhoods within the city of Chicago that can?t be targeted by city name. By using zip code targeting, however, ikram could run ads in these neighborhoods. (You can only target ads by city OR zip code so, in this case, you?d have to set up one ad that targets the suburbs and another that targets within the city limits of Chicago by zip.)

Lastly, Facebook lets advertisers target users on or around their birthday. Using this information, ikram could run ads promoting a special 25% Off birthday coupon that will reach people right around their birthdays.

Example 2 ? Generic Political Candidate

It?s campaign season here in the U.S. You can?t turn on the TV without seeing ads for politicians. Political yard signs are sprouting up like weeds. And the backs of cars are getting covered up with bumper stickers for, or against, various candidates.

But how could a candidate turn to Facebook to reach voters?

I won?t use any specific politician here as an example, but let?s look at some of the ways a politician, in general, could use Facebook advertising.

First, and most obvious, is targeting users geographically. Depending on whether the candidate is running for local, state or national office, they could use Facebook?s geographic targeting options to reach their intended audience.

Also, since you have to be 18 or older to vote, it makes sense to run ads only to those 18 and above.

But politicians can get very creative using Facebook.

Sticking with age targeting for a moment. The candidate may want to target older voters with ads promoting the politician?s plans for Social Security and Medicare. There are over 16 million FB users who are 64 or older in the United States that could be targeted with ads about those issues.

Let?s say you have a candidate that wants to tout their strong record of protecting the environment. Under ?Interests? in the Broad Category targeting, one of the options is ?Environment? which the candidate could easily use to target voters who are likely to care more about environmental policies.

Using Precise Interest Targeting, the campaign could get even more creative. They could target:

  • Users who like the Sierra Club, the National Wildlife Federation and other environmental groups.
  • People who like Al Gore and/or his movie ?The Inconvenient Truth?.
  • Those who enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, or hunting.

Facebook also lets you target parents. So a political candidate could run ads touting their plans for Education to parents (and you can get specific on Facebook here by targeting parents of kids of various ages as seen below).

There?s also an ?Education/Teaching? option under the Broad category of ?Interests? that could be useful here.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for a politician. They can target people by political affiliations, specific political causes, and more. A savvy political campaign could get very strategic on Facebook by targeting highly relevant ads to specific demographic groups.

Example 3 -? Chobani Greek Yogurt

For our last example, let?s look at Chobani, a national brand of Greek Yogurt.

For starters, Chobani has a product line, Chobani Champions, made just for kids. To target parents of kids with this healthy snack idea, here are a few options?

Since moms tend to do more of the food shopping, they could limit their ads to just target women. Then, as with our political candidate example, Chobani could benefit from targeting Parents using the Broad Interest Targeting options on Facebook. If their primary target market here is young kids to teens, they could limit ads serving to only Parents (child: 4-12) and Parents (child: 13-15).

Using Precise Interest Targeting, Chobani could focus on brand names and interests that parents identify with.

One option is to use brand names like Graco (baby products), Fisher-Price and/or Build-A-Bear Workshop.

They could also target specific groups such as Soccer Moms, Homeschoolers, or Mommy Bloggers (the last is not a big group, but the hope would be to get some Mommy Bloggers talking about Chobani on their blogs for the viral marketing effect).

Another market for Chobani is adults looking for a healthy snack/meal.

There are some Broad Interest category groups worth testing that would target Facebook users more likely to be interested in healthy products/snacks. Two good options here are ?Outdoor Fitness Activities? (under Activities) and ?Health & Wellbeing? (under Interests).

For Precise Interest Targeting, Chobani could target specific activities enjoyed by those interested in a healthy lifestyle such as yoga or those who participate in marathons or triathlons.

Since Chobani sells Greek Yogurt, obviously targeting those who Like Greek Yogurt makes sense! This can be done by targeting the keyword ?Greek Yogurt? as well as by targeting the names competing brands like Voskos and Oikos.

Another interesting opportunity for Chobani that I?ve successfully used in the past is targeting people interested in Couponing with ads promoting a coupon.

There are a number of coupon websites that get a ton of traffic and have very loyal followers. If one of those sites picks up on a coupon Chobani offers through Facebook, the coupon could easily go viral and reach many more people who would not have seen the Facebook ads. (Using this strategy, the brand I was running FB ads for got thousands of Likes in a few days because a few coupon sites published their coupon?and they only spent about $50 in clicks during that time!)

These three examples give you a taste of what?s possible with Facebook targeting. As you can see, you can get very creative in how you reach your ideal prospects.

Yes, it can be a challenge to measure the results of FB ads. Yes, it?s difficult to convert Facebook visitors into customers. And, yes, there?s a lot of room for improvement for FB paid advertising.

But, if you know who you?re trying to reach, you can get very targeted, and very creative, about reaching them through Facebook.

Obama suggests Romney is out of touch with America

MIAMI (AP) ? President Barack Obama cast Mitt Romney on Thursday as an out-of-touch challenger for the White House and an advocate of education cuts that could cause teacher strikes to spread from Chicago to other cities. The Republican countered that the U.S. economy "is bumping along the bottom" under Obama, and he predicted victory in the fall.

The two men eyed each other across hotly contested Florida, a state with 29 electoral votes, more than any other battleground in the close race for the White House.

"When you express an attitude that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot," the president said. That was in response to a question about Romney's recent observation that 47 percent of Americans pay no income tax and believe they are victims and entitled to an array of federal benefits.

Obama spoke at a town hall-style forum aired by the Spanish-language television network Univision.

For his part, Romney was eager to move past that controversy, which has knocked him off stride. He disclosed plans for a three-day bus tour early next week through Ohio with running mate Paul Ryan and sought to return the campaign focus to the economic issues that have dominated the race all year.

At a fundraiser in Miami, Romney looked ahead to his televised head-to-head encounters with Obama this fall. "He's a very eloquent speaker, and so I'm sure in the debates, as last time ... he'll be very eloquent in describing his vision," the Republican said. "But he can't win by his words, because his record speaks so loudly in our ears. What he has done in the last four years is establish an economy that's bumping along the bottom."

Less than seven weeks before Election Day, polls make the race a close one, likely to be settled in eight or so swing states where neither man has a solid edge. Obama has gained ground in polls in some of those states since the completion of the Democratic National Convention two weeks ago, while Romney has struggled with controversies of his own making that have left Republicans frustrated at his performance as a candidate.

Still, there were fresh signs of weakness in the nation's job market as the two candidates vied for support in Florida.

The Labor Department said the number of Americans seeking unemployment fell only slightly last week, to a seasonally adjusted level of 382,000, suggesting that businesses remain reluctant to add to their payrolls. The four-week average rose for the fifth straight week to the highest level in nearly three months.

After more than two days of struggle, Romney seemed eager to leave the 47 percent controversy behind as he appeared at the Univision forum Wednesday night. "'My campaign is about the 100 percent in America," he said firmly.

But Obama made his most extensive comments to date on the subject since the emergence of a video showing Romney telling donors last May that as a candidate his job wasn't to worry about 47 percent of the country.

"Their problem is not they're not working hard enough or they don't want to work or they're being taxed too little or they just want to loaf around and gather government checks," the president said."

"Are there people that abuse the system? Yes, both at the bottom and at the top," he added, including millionaires who he said pay no income taxes. He said many at the low end of the income scale pay other forms of taxes, and some who don't pay taxes are senior citizens, students, disabled, veterans or soldiers who are stationed overseas.

"Americans work hard, and if they are not working right now I promise you they want to go to work," he said.

As for education, the president said Romney and running mate Ryan advocate a budget that would cut federal funds for schools by about 20 percent.

"And you could see potentially even more teachers being laid off, working conditions for teachers becoming even worse and potentially for more strikes," he said.

The president added that under his administration, "what we say to school districts all across the country is we will provide you with more help as long as you're being accountable, and as far as teachers go, I think they work as hard as anybody, but we also want to make sure that they are having high standards of performance in math and science."

Money was not a significant issue in the Chicago strike. Mayor Rahm Emanuel secured an extension of the school day and empowered principals to hire the teachers they want. Teachers were able to soften a new evaluation process and win some job protections.

The day's campaign events showed the complexities of campaigning in Florida, a state that is home to large populations of seniors and of Hispanics.

Romney released a new television commercial designed to appeal to both groups.

It features Sen. Marco Rubio plugging the Republicans' plan to overhaul Medicare, a flashpoint in the campaign that Obama says could threaten future beneficiaries with high out-of-pocket costs.

Saying his mother is 81, Rubio declares in the ad: "We can save Medicare without changing hers, but only if younger Americans accept that our Medicare will be different than our parents', when we retire in thirty years.

"But after all they did for us, isn't that the least we can do?"

While Obama is likely to win the Hispanic vote overwhelmingly, he drew criticism in his appearances.

He said the lack of immigration reform legislation was his biggest failure as president and "not for a lack of trying or desire." He said he couldn't find a single Republican to help work on the legislation. "I'm happy to take responsibility for being naive here," the president said when pressed to admit he broke his promise.

Univision anchor Jorge Ramos interjected, "You promised us, and a promise is a promise. And with all due respect, you didn't keep that promise."

Obama drew praise from Hispanic groups earlier in the year when he announced a policy shift that will allow some immigrants brought to the United States illegally as children to avoid deportation.

Romney has been critical of the change, but has declined to say if he would reverse it if he wins the White House.

Vt. man accused of crushing cruisers charged again

NEWPORT, Vt. (AP) ? A Vermont man charged with driving a tractor over seven police vehicles and crushing them is facing another charge.

The Orleans County court says Roger Pion (PEE'-on) was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

Pion already faced 14 criminal counts after police say he drove his dad's tractor over six cruisers and a van at the county sheriff's department in Derby on Aug. 2.

Police say he then drove the tractor toward downtown Newport before they stopped him. They say he had been angry over a previous arrest for marijuana possession.

Pion has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He received financial support from people worldwide after his arrest. He thanked them when he left a correctional facility last month and said he had no regrets.

His lawyer says the latest charge "seems gratuitous."

As it turns out, the internal layout of each earpiece is essentially that of an average 'bud with a forward-facing driver. The new top section, with its side-facing audio port, is apparently a good chunk of what affects the sound in unison with those strategically placed vents. The improved bass and low-mid response we noted in our review falls in line with iFixit's confirmation that the new driver in each Pod is made with a paper speaker cone -- in contrast to the plastic used on the older model.

As the site notes, those driver diaphragms should be less likely to blow-out, and the basket behind 'em have also been updated with a cleaner fit and finish. Aside from that, you'll be pleased to know that the inline remote appears to have an improved seal for protection from the elements, and it'll hold up better to cable snags. As you might imagine, the $29 headphones have been deemed as disposable rather than repairable. Don't take our word for it however -- you can read the teardown for yourself at the source link below.

Hasselblad Lunar mirrorless camera hands-on

The Lunar has landed -- at Photokina, at least. Hasselblad was showing off a slew of different designs for the forthcoming camera -- and while we were told that its still in prototype mode (both from company reps and signage on the device itself), the camera seemed to be in mostly working order. The first thing you'll notice, once you get past the space-age design, is the fact that the camera really does feel like a rebranded Sony NEX device slipped into a new shell, and as such, it takes those Sony e-mount lenses. And on the back, you'll find that similar collapsible display.

That said, it really does feel quite nice in the hand -- the device we played with had a leathery grip -- there are a number of carbon fiber and wood options available, as well. All of this is punctuated by a metal top with large metallic knobs, and inside you'll find an APS-C 24.3 megapixel sensor. The Lunar will start at €5,000 when it launches in Q1 of next year. And in case that's not rich enough for your blood, you can tack a "significant" amount onto that by getting the models decked out in pricier materials.
