Five years after the start of the Great Recession, the toll is terrifyingly clear: Millions of middle-class jobs have been lost in developed countries the world over.?

And the situation is even worse than it appears.?

Most of the jobs will never return, and millions more are likely to vanish as well, say experts who study the labor market. What's more, these jobs aren't just being lost to China and other developing countries, and they aren't just factory work. Increasingly, jobs are disappearing in the service sector, home to two-thirds of all workers.?

They're being obliterated by technology.?

Year after year, the software that runs computers and an array of other machines and devices becomes more sophisticated and powerful and capable of doing more efficiently tasks that humans have always done. For decades, science fiction warned of a future when we would be architects of our own obsolescence, replaced by our machines; an Associated Press analysis finds that the future has arrived.?

"The jobs that are going away aren't coming back," says Andrew McAfee, principal research scientist at the Center for Digital Business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-author of "Race Against the Machine." "I have never seen a period where computers demonstrated as many skills and abilities as they have over the past seven years."?

The global economy is being reshaped by machines that generate and analyze vast amounts of data; by devices such as smartphones and tablet computers that let people work just about anywhere, even when they're on the move; by smarter, nimbler robots; and by services that let businesses rent computing power when they need it, instead of installing expensive equipment and hiring IT staffs to run it. Whole employment categories, from secretaries to travel agents, are starting to disappear.?

"There's no sector of the economy that's going to get a pass," says Martin Ford, who runs a software company and wrote "The Lights in the Tunnel," a book predicting widespread job losses. "It's everywhere."?

The numbers startle even labor economists. In the United States, half the 7.5 million jobs lost during the Great Recession were in industries that pay middle-class wages, ranging from $38,000 to $68,000. But only 2 percent of the 3.5 million jobs gained since the recession ended in June 2009 are in midpay industries. Nearly 70 percent are in low-pay industries, 29 percent in industries that pay well.?

In the 17 European countries that use the euro as their currency, the numbers are even worse. Almost 4.3 million low-pay jobs have been gained since mid-2009, but the loss of midpay jobs has never stopped. A total of 7.6 million disappeared from January 2008 through last June.?

Experts warn that this "hollowing out" of the middle-class workforce is far from over. They predict the loss of millions more jobs as technology becomes even more sophisticated and reaches deeper into our lives. Maarten Goos, an economist at the University of Leuven in Belgium, says Europe could double its middle-class job losses.?

Some occupations are beneficiaries of the march of technology, such as software engineers and app designers for smartphones and tablet computers. Overall, though, technology is eliminating far more jobs than it is creating.?

To understand the impact technology is having on middle-class jobs in developed countries, the AP analyzed employment data from 20 countries; tracked changes in hiring by industry, pay and task; compared job losses and gains during recessions and expansions over the past four decades; and interviewed economists, technology experts, robot manufacturers, software developers, entrepreneurs and people in the labor force who ranged from CEOs to the unemployed.?

The AP's key findings:?

• For more than three decades, technology has reduced the number of jobs in manufacturing. Robots and other machines controlled by computer programs work faster and make fewer mistakes than humans. Now, that same efficiency is being unleashed in the service economy, which employs more than two-thirds of the workforce in developed countries. Technology is eliminating jobs in office buildings, retail establishments and other businesses consumers deal with every day.?
  
• Technology is being adopted by every kind of organization that employs people. It's replacing workers in large corporations and small businesses, established companies and start-ups. It's being used by schools, colleges and universities; hospitals and other medical facilities; nonprofit organizations and the military.?
  
• The most vulnerable workers are doing repetitive tasks that programmers can write software for ? an accountant checking a list of numbers, an office manager filing forms, a paralegal reviewing documents for key words to help in a case. As software becomes even more sophisticated, victims are expected to include those who juggle tasks, such as supervisors and managers ? workers who thought they were protected by a college degree.?
  
• Thanks to technology, companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index reported one-third more profit the past year than they earned the year before the Great Recession. They've also expanded their businesses, but total employment, at 21.1 million, has declined by a half-million.?
  
• Start-ups account for much of the job growth in developed economies, but software is allowing entrepreneurs to launch businesses with a third fewer employees than in the 1990s. There is less need for administrative support and back-office jobs that handle accounting, payroll and benefits.?
  
• It's becoming a self-serve world. Instead of relying on someone else in the workplace or our personal lives, we use technology to do tasks ourselves. Some find this frustrating; others like the feeling of control. Either way, this trend will only grow as software permeates our lives.?
  
• Technology is replacing workers in developed countries regardless of their politics, policies and laws. Union rules and labor laws may slow the dismissal of employees, but no country is attempting to prohibit organizations from using technology that allows them to operate more efficiently ? and with fewer employees.?
  

Some analysts reject the idea that technology has been a big job killer. They note that the collapse of the housing market in the U.S., Ireland, Spain and other countries and the ensuing global recession wiped out millions of middle-class construction and factory jobs. In their view, governments could bring many of the jobs back if they would put aside worries about their heavy debts and spend more. Others note that jobs continue to be lost to China, India and other countries in the developing world.?

But to the extent technology has played a role, it raises the specter of high unemployment even after economic growth accelerates. Some economists say millions of middle-class workers must be retrained to do other jobs if they hope to get work again. Others are more hopeful. They note that technological change over the centuries eventually has created more jobs than it destroyed, though the wait can be long and painful.?

A common refrain: The developed world may face years of high middle-class unemployment, social discord, divisive politics, falling living standards and dashed hopes.?

'Jobless recovery' a misnomer
In the U.S., the economic recovery that started in June 2009 has been called the third straight "jobless recovery."?

But that's a misnomer. The jobs came back after the first two.?

Most recessions since World War II were followed by a surge in new jobs as consumers started spending again and companies hired to meet the new demand. In the months after recessions ended in 1991 and 2001, there was no familiar snap-back, but all the jobs had returned in less than three years.?

But 42 months after the Great Recession ended, the U.S. has gained only 3.5 million, or 47 percent, of the 7.5 million jobs that were lost. The 17 countries that use the euro had 3.5 million fewer jobs last June than in December 2007.?

This has truly been a jobless recovery, and the lack of midpay jobs is almost entirely to blame.?

Fifty percent of the U.S. jobs lost were in midpay industries, but Moody's Analytics, a research firm, says just 2 percent of the 3.5 million jobs gained are in that category. After the four previous recessions, at least 30 percent of jobs created ? and as many as 46 percent ? were in midpay industries.?

Other studies that group jobs differently show a similar drop in middle-class work.?

Some of the most startling studies have focused on midskill, midpay jobs that require tasks that follow well-defined procedures and are repeated throughout the day. Think travel agents, salespeople in stores, office assistants and back-office workers like benefits managers and payroll clerks, as well as machine operators and other factory jobs. An August 2012 paper by economists Henry Siu of the University of British Columbia and Nir Jaimovich of Duke University found these kinds of jobs comprise fewer than half of all jobs, yet accounted for nine of 10 of all losses in the Great Recession. And they have kept disappearing in the economic recovery.?

Webb Wheel Products makes parts for truck brakes, which involves plenty of repetitive work. Its newest employee is the Doosan V550M, and it's a marvel. It can spin a 130-pound brake drum like a child's top, smooth its metal surface, then drill holes ? all without missing a beat. And it doesn't take vacations or "complain about anything," says Dwayne Ricketts, president of the Cullman, Ala., company.?

Thanks to computerized machines, Webb Wheel hasn't added a factory worker in three years, though it's making 300,000 more drums annually, a 25 percent increase.?

"Everyone is waiting for the unemployment rate to drop, but I don't know if it will much," Ricketts says. "Companies in the recession learned to be more efficient, and they're not going to go back."?

In Europe, companies couldn't go back even if they wanted to. The 17 countries that use the euro slipped into another recession 14 months ago, in November 2011. The current unemployment rate is a record 11.8 percent.?

European companies had been using technology to replace midpay workers for years, and now that has accelerated.?

"The recessions have amplified the trend," says Goos, the Belgian economist. "New jobs are being created, but not the middle-pay ones."?

In Canada, a 2011 study by economists at the University of British Columbia and York University in Toronto found a similar pattern of middle-class losses, though they were working with older data. In the 15 years through 2006, the share of total jobs held by many midpay, midskill occupations shrank. The share held by foremen fell 37 percent, workers in administrative and senior clerical roles fell 18 percent and those in sales and service fell 12 percent.?

In Japan, a 2009 report from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo documented a "substantial" drop in midpay, midskill jobs in the five years through 2005, and linked it to technology.?

Developing economies have been spared the technological onslaught ? for now. Countries like Brazil and China are still growing middle-class jobs because they're shifting from export-driven to consumer-based economies. But even they are beginning to use more machines in manufacturing. The cheap labor they relied on to make goods from apparel to electronics is no longer so cheap as their living standards rise.?

One example is Sunbird Engineering, a Hong Kong firm that makes mirror frames for heavy trucks at a factory in southern China. Salaries at its plant in Dongguan have nearly tripled from $80 a month in 2005 to $225 today. "Automation is the obvious next step," CEO Bill Pike says.?

Sunbird is installing robotic arms that drill screws into a mirror assembly, work now done by hand. The machinery will allow the company to eliminate two positions on a 13-person assembly line. Pike hopes that additional automation will allow the company to reduce another five or six jobs from the line.?

"By automating, we can outlive the labor cost increases inevitable in China," Pike says. "Those who automate in China will win the battle of increased costs."?

Foxconn Technology Group, which assembles iPhones at factories in China, unveiled plans in 2011 to install one million robots over three years.?

A recent headline in the China Daily newspaper: "Chinese robot wars set to erupt."?

Where did the jobs go?
Candidates for U.S. president last year never tired of telling Americans how jobs were being shipped overseas. China, with its vast army of cheaper labor and low-value currency, was easy to blame.?

But most jobs cut in the U.S. and Europe weren't moved. No one got them. They vanished. And the villain in this story ? a clever software engineer working in Silicon Valley or the high-tech hub around Heidelberg, Germany ? isn't so easy to hate.?

"It doesn't have political appeal to say the reason we have a problem is we're so successful in technology," says Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize-winning economist at Columbia University. "There's no enemy there."?

Unless you count family and friends and the person staring at you in the mirror. The uncomfortable truth is technology is killing jobs with the help of ordinary consumers by enabling them to quickly do tasks that workers used to do full time, for salaries.?

Use a self-checkout lane at the supermarket or drugstore? A worker behind a cash register used to do that.?

Buy clothes without visiting a store? You've taken work from a salesman.?

Click "accept" in an email invitation to attend a meeting? You've pushed an office assistant closer to unemployment.?

Book your vacation using an online program? You've helped lay off a travel agent. Perhaps at American Express Co., which announced this month that it plans to cut 5,400 jobs, mainly in its travel business, as more of its customers shift to online portals to plan trips.?

Software is picking out worrisome blots in medical scans, running trains without conductors, driving cars without drivers, spotting profits in stocks trades in milliseconds, analyzing Twitter traffic to tell where to sell certain snacks, sifting through documents for evidence in court cases, recording power usage beamed from digital utility meters at millions of homes, and sorting returned library books.?

Technology gives rise to "cheaper products and cool services," says David Autor, an economist at MIT, one of the first to document tech's role in cutting jobs. "But if you lose your job, that is slim compensation."?

Even the most commonplace technologies ? take, say, email ? are making it tough for workers to get jobs, including ones with MBAs, like Roshanne Redmond, a former project manager at a commercial real estate developer.?

"I used to get on the phone, talk to a secretary and coordinate calendars," Redmond says. "Now, things are done by computer."?

Technology is used by companies to run leaner and smarter in good times and bad, but never more than in bad. In a recession, sales fall and companies cut jobs to save money. Then they turn to technology to do tasks people used to do. And that's when it hits them: They realize they don't have to re-hire the humans when business improves, or at least not as many.?

The Hackett Group, a consultant on back-office jobs, estimates 2 million of them in finance, human resources, information technology and procurement have disappeared in the U.S. and Europe since the Great Recession. It pins the blame for more than half of the losses on technology. These are jobs that used to fill cubicles at almost every company ? clerks paying bills and ordering supplies, benefits managers filing health-care forms and IT experts helping with computer crashes.?

"The effect of (technology) on white-collar jobs is huge, but it's not obvious," says MIT's McAfee. Companies "don't put out a press release saying we're not hiring again because of machines."?

What hope is there for the future??
Historically, new companies and new industries have been the incubator of new jobs. Start-up companies no more than five years old are big sources of new jobs in developed economies. In the U.S., they accounted for 99 percent of new private sector jobs in 2005, according to a study by the University of Maryland's John Haltiwanger and two other economists.?

But even these companies are hiring fewer people. The average new business employed 4.7 workers when it opened its doors in 2011, down from 7.6 in the 1990s, according to a Labor Department study released last March.?

Technology is probably to blame, wrote the report's authors, Eleanor Choi and James Spletzer. Entrepreneurs no longer need people to do clerical and administrative tasks to help them get their businesses off the ground.?

In the old days ? say, 10 years ago ? "you'd need an assistant pretty early to coordinate everything ? or you'd pay a huge opportunity cost for the entrepreneur or the president to set up a meeting," says Jeff Connally, CEO of CMIT Solutions, a technology consultancy to small businesses.?

Now technology means "you can look at your calendar and everybody else's calendar and ? bing! ? you've set up a meeting." So no assistant gets hired.?

Entrepreneur Andrew Schrage started the financial advice website Money Crashers in 2009 with a partner and one freelance writer. The bare-bones start-up was only possible, Schrage says, because of technology that allowed the company to get online help with accounting and payroll and other support functions without hiring staff.?

"Had I not had access to cloud computing and outsourcing, I estimate that I would have needed 5-10 employees to begin this venture," Schrage says. "I doubt I would have been able to launch my business."?

Technological innovations have been throwing people out of jobs for centuries. But they eventually created more work, and greater wealth, than they destroyed. Ford, the author and software engineer, thinks there is reason to believe that this time will be different. He sees virtually no end to the inroads of computers into the workplace. Eventually, he says, software will threaten the livelihoods of doctors, lawyers and other highly skilled professionals.?

Many economists are encouraged by history and think the gains eventually will outweigh the losses. But even they have doubts.?

"What's different this time is that digital technologies show up in every corner of the economy," says McAfee, a self-described "digital optimist." "Your tablet (computer) is just two or three years old, and it's already taken over our lives."?

Peter Lindert, an economist at the University of California, Davis, says the computer is more destructive than innovations in the Industrial Revolution because the pace at which it is upending industries makes it hard for people to adapt.?

Occupations that provided middle-class lifestyles for generations can disappear in a few years. Utility meter readers are just one example. As power companies began installing so-called smart readers outside homes, the number of meter readers in the U.S. plunged from 56,000 in 2001 to 36,000 in 2010, according to the Labor Department.?

In 10 years? That number is expected to be zero.?

Dominion, a large energy company based in Virginia, and FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCE), a Connecticut manufacturer of fuel cell power plants, have announced that they will be developing the largest fuel cell power plant in North America. Located in Bridgeport, Conn., the plant will use a clean-tech process to transform natural gas into electricity. The 14.9 megawatt facility will produce enough electricity for about 15,000 homes delivered through a local micro-grid.

The $125 million Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell project is part of the state of Connecticut?s Project 150, a program designed to increase renewable and clean energy projects in the state by 150 megawatts. The program brings together private and public funds through the state?s Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA) to support development of clean energy projects. The City of Bridgeport is also providing tax incentives to support the fuel cell project. The Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) will buy the electricity under a 15-year purchase agreement.

Dominion, through its subsidiary Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell LLC, is contracting FuelCell Energy to build, operate, and maintain the plant. FCE will supply five of its top-of-the-line 2.8 megawatt DFC3000s fuel cell plants. Construction is to begin immediately, and the facility is scheduled to go into operation in 2013.

FCE?s DFC3000 operates at a very high 47 percent efficiency, according to the company. A company announcement says that fuel cells generate ?ultra-clean? power ?electrochemically, without combustion.? Fuel cell generation emits dramatically lower levels of pollutants such as nitrogen oxide (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SOx) and particulate matter. Fuel cell technology lends itself to distributed generation, which places power generation close to the point of use, reducing ?the need for electric utilities to invest in costly and difficult to site transmission and distribution grids,? according to FCE.

Dominion CEO Thomas F. Farrell said in a company announcement that Dominion is ?adding fuel cell technology to our energy portfolio that already includes wind, hydro, biomass and, soon, solar.? Dominion owns wind farms in West Virginia and Indiana, a biomass power plant in Virginia, and hydroelectric power stations in Virginia and North Carolina. The company recently initiated a pilot project to test solar-power generation on rooftops leased from commercial and industrial firms.

Israel to evict settlers from 4 Hebron homes

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The Israeli government says it will evict two Jewish settler families from property they seized in the volatile West Bank city of Hebron.

As part of a campaign to tighten Jewish control of Hebron, two settler families took over four stalls in the town's Arab wholesale market a decade ago and turned them into homes.

The plots are owned by a Jewish family that left the city before Jordan took it over in the late 1940s. Palestinians have been renting it since as protected tenants.

On Monday, Israel it would clear the homes by April 24. It did not rule out the settlers' request to transfer the property to other Jews because the property belongs to Jews.

Hebron is home to 180,000 Palestinians. Several hundred ultranationalist settlers also live there.

2 Kansas officers fatally shot outside market

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) ? Two Kansas police officers were fatally shot outside a grocery store Sunday while responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle, authorities said.

Topeka Police Chief Ronald Miller called the shootings of Cpl. David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly "unspeakable." He said both Gogian, 50, and Atherly, 29, were shot in the head by a gunman who opened fire on them within minutes of their arrival to investigate the vehicle.

"It's clearly beyond words. It's unspeakable almost about why this happens and why this is happening in America at this stage in our history," Miller said.

Police were searching for a 22-year-old man believed to have been the one who fired on the officers from the vehicle. He remained at large Sunday night. Miller didn't know the motive for the shooting but said the suspect has a criminal history, though he wouldn't elaborate.

A third officer who went to the scene to check on the vehicle was not injured in the shooting.

Gogian and Atherly were taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

The call about the vehicle came shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday, police said. Gogian and Atherly had arrived as backup for another officer when someone in the vehicle they were investigating started shooting.

"I don't believe they had any idea this situation was going to go this direction as quickly as it did," Miller said.

Police would not say whether the officers had reached the vehicle when they were shot or what kind of gun was used in the shooting.

Miller said there was more than one person in the vehicle, which later was found outside a house about 10 blocks from the grocery store. Officers searched the home but didn't find the shooting suspect.

The chief declined to say why officers were investigating the vehicle and why it was considered suspicious.

Old neighborhoods, economically and ethnically diverse, surround the grocery store. Some of the homes are a century old, and they vary in how well they've been kept up. Green space behind the store is home to an annual art fair, and the city's public library is within walking distance.

A small crowd met for a candlelight vigil Sunday night outside police headquarters after hearing about the shooting. As the group gathered, police officials announced to reporters nearby that the officers had died.

Gogian started with the Topeka Police Department in September 2004. Atherly had been with the department since April 2011.

Miller said Gogian was a retired military serviceman. It wasn't immediately clear what branch of the military. He has a son who's also a Topeka police officer.

"He had spent his life in service to his country and in the city of Topeka," the chief said.

Meanwhile, Atherly was "just getting started" in his career, he said.

The last time a Topeka officer was killed in the line of duty was 2000, and it's been longer than that ? since 1995 ? that one was fatally shot on the job.

FOOD MONSTER: The Harvester in Brayford Wharf, Lincoln | This is ...

When the Harvester sprang to life in Lincoln in 2010, my nose perked up at the delicious meaty smells wafting out from the kitchens.

It was something Lincoln had been lacking for some time; a decent grill and salad eatery that would offer reasonable prices on the city's waterfront.

The chain has more than 200 restaurants across the country and the city's venue commands a good position overlooking the barges on the Brayford.

Despite the views, the chill in the air when my friend and I visited at the start of December meant we shot straight inside to the warmth and tantalising smells of sizzling ribs and chicken.

Having already visited before on a few occasions, I knew what to expect, although I'd never been in a busy Saturday night before.

I had been told over the phone that I was unable to make a reservation, which was disappointing, but understandable in a fast-moving restaurant.

When my friend and I arrived, we were told there was a 15-minute wait for a table but we were welcome to wait at the bar and order a drink. It was frustrating to have to pay by card for two cokes and not have them added to the bill, though.

After a short wait, we were shown to a table. After a quick look at the menu, which had been updated with several new additions since my last visit in August, a busy but very friendly waiter came to take our order.

Despite the large portions ? which are always made to feel even larger due to the free salad bar on offer for all diners ? we decided we would share a starter. Unfortunately, we were told our first choice of creamy garlic mushrooms with crusty bread was unavailable, so we instead opted for the loaded potato skins.

I then chose the belly boneless ribs and chicken breast with peas, new potatoes and a side of country gravy for my main, while my friend opted for the baby back BBQ ribs and quarter chicken with corn on the cob, chips and an extra pot of BBQ sauce. We also both asked for a glass of Pinot Grigio to accompany our meal.

Before any of our order arrived, we headed to the salad bar to fill up on the usual variety. I'm sad to say that this wasn't up to the usual standard.

There were several empty containers and lots of food had spilled into containers next to each other. This is frustrating as I am famously known for not liking mayonnaise, which now covered a lot of the other salad items I would have chosen.

We both filled up as best we could and the bits we did get were nice and crunchy, with good dressing (Red Devil for me and a creamy Thousand Island for her).

The fast and friendly service continued, however, with our wine waiting for us at the table.

Our shared starter was unfortunately another disappointment. The potato skins were very dry in texture and the toppings were rather bland, with a definite taste of having been brought in frozen and then quickly re-heated. We didn't finish the small portion between us.

The main courses however, redeemed the venue in my eyes. The food was hot and tasty and the meat juicy and tender. Everything was well-seasoned and the accompanying sauces added an extra level of flavour to the dish. The portion sizes were also generous.

We weren't asked if we wanted dessert, but as the menus are on the table, perhaps the staff expect customers to indicate if they are interested in pudding. We were far too full for anything more, so just asked for the bill. While this visit wasn't outstanding, I was happy with the main course and I will return on a quieter night.

THE FOOD: Fully Loaded Skins to share ?3.99; The Original Combo ?8.69; the Harvester Combo ?9.99; two cokes ?4.90; three glasses of Pinot Grigio ?9.45.

TOTAL: ?32.12.

FINAL VERDICT: Good main courses, but a disappointing starter and salad bar; a busy and bustling dining environment with friendly staff.

Humanoid robot flexes its 160 muscles for creepy realism

Robots that look like people?are nothing new, but not all of them truly aim to imitate the human body. The Kenshiro robot, an ongoing project at the University of Tokyo, aims to simulate a person right down the muscles and bones.

Kenshiro is the latest in a series that started with Kenta, a robot made to imitate, in simplified form, most of the human body's musculature. A quasi-futuristic shell and staring eyes gave it a slightly nightmarish appearance, but the robot itself was groundbreaking. With about 100 cables and motors, it simulated dozens of muscle structures.

Now, the upgraded and renamed version has 160 pulley-like robo-muscles ? more than any other humanoid robot in the world. There are 76 in the torso, 22 in the neck, 25 in each leg, and 12 in each shoulder. The many muscles and tendons governing the face, hands, and feet are left out or grossly simplified, being at present too complex to include.

The result is a headless skeleton that may or may not be more terrifying than its predecessor. But seeing it in motion is what really drops you into the uncanny valley:

While some movements are still halting and lack the fluidity of smaller, more purpose-built systems like artificial hands or legs, the human quality of Kenshiro's motion?is difficult to deny.

The muscles, bone structure and spine are meant to work and flex the way ours do, not just accomplish similar tasks.?The idea is to eventually build a robot that not only looks like a human or can work in the same space as humans, but one that actually moves and acts using the same principles and mechanisms.

That means striking a balance between weight, power?and speed. Our own bodies are marvels of efficiency and elegance (notwithstanding a few bum evolutionary hand-me-downs), so matching it will be no easy task. Kenshiro is made to have about the size and weight of a 120-pound human male, but the motors and materials necessary to produce a similar range of movement and power?would make the robot too heavy.

The leader of the project, Yuto Nakanishi, is (among other things)?currently working on his team's entry to the DARPA Robotics Challenge, in which several leading robot makers are working to create a humanoid rescue?robot. Chances are that the next time Kenshiro gets a big update, it'll have more than a little competition.

Anthony scores 45, Knicks rally to beat Nets

NEW YORK (AP) ? Now, this Knicks-Nets rivalry is really on.

If it hadn't started when the Nets left New Jersey and set up shop in the Knicks' city, it surely arrived when Jason Kidd delivered the tiebreaking 3-pointer Tuesday night, making himself an enemy of his former franchise.

"I hate him," Nets guard Deron Williams said.

Williams was kidding, the point guards are friends. But Nets fans who watched Kidd ask out of the organization and Carmelo Anthony refuse to come could easily work up more dislike of the Knicks after watching those two Tuesday.

Anthony scored a season-high 45 points, Kidd made the tiebreaking shot with 24 seconds left, and the Knicks rallied from an early 17-point hole to beat Brooklyn 100-97.

Kidd finished with 18 points against his former team, who used to dominate the Knicks when he played in New Jersey. He pumped his fist afterward in what he said was as much emotion as he shows, though denied taking any special pleasure in beating the Nets.

"I'm a competitor. I want to win," he said.

Now the series is tied at 1-1 since the Nets moved to Brooklyn, both games coming down to the tense final minutes.

"It is (a rivalry). I mean, after that first game, we might as well accept that," Anthony said. "It is what it is. They're on our division, we see them four times a year. It is a rivalry. It's great for New York to have that in Brooklyn and in Manhattan. When we come here it's a battle. When they come there, it's going to be a battle. We expect that."

Andray Blatche scored 23 points in place of Brook Lopez, who missed his sixth straight game with a sprained right foot. Williams added 18 points and 10 assists, and Reggie Evans grabbed 18 rebounds, but the Nets lost their fifth straight.

Gerald Wallace scored 17 points, but both he and Williams missed potential tying 3-pointers on the last possession after Kidd broke a 97-all tie with his 3-pointer from the left side while being fouled by Jerry Stackhouse.

Kidd missed the free throw in an otherwise terrific effort for the 39-year-old point guard who helped carry the Knicks while fellow point guard Raymond Felton was struggling through a 3-for-12 night. Kidd had six rebounds and six assists, playing 38 minutes.

There were wild swings in momentum and crowd support in the second half, once the Knicks had gotten themselves untracked after the Nets threatened to run them off the floor in the first quarter.

The crowd was loud and energetic, the players and fans eventually matching the playoff-like intensity from the first meeting, a 96-89 Nets victory in overtime here on Nov. 26. That had left both teams tied atop the Atlantic Division at 9-4, but the Knicks have since gone 7-1 to surge to the top of the Eastern Conference, while Brooklyn has gone 2-5.

It occasionally felt like a Knicks home game, with "MVP! MVP!" chants for Anthony ? which the Knicks think he deserves ? and a black-and-orange dressed Spike Lee sitting courtside and yelling at the referees.

"He's had some pretty good games under my tutelage but I just think tonight he wanted it so badly, man," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "He made shot after shot."

The Brooklyn native never wanted to play in New Jersey, preferring instead a trade to the Knicks, and Kidd eventually wanted out after leading the Nets to two NBA Finals but never the local popularity of the Knicks.

But despite their efforts, the Nets had plenty of chances to send their fans home happy.

"This was a winnable game," Nets coach Avery Johnson said, "but we just couldn't quite close it."

The Nets scored the first five points, gave up a 3-pointer to Kidd, then outscored the Knicks 16-2 over the next five-plus minutes to open a 21-5 lead on Blatche's layup with 4:29 left in the first quarter. Brooklyn hit nine of its first 11 shots, led by as much as 17 and was ahead 30-16 going to the second. Blatche had 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting in eight minutes.

The Nets still led by 16 with 4:49 remaining in the half, but Anthony nailed a jumper and 3-pointer, triggering an 18-6 run to end the half that he capped with a layup with 1.8 seconds left, bringing the Knicks within 53-49 as they headed to the locker room.

The Knicks scored the first five points of the second half to take their first lead, but Williams quickly put the Nets back ahead and Blatche helped them stay there. Brooklyn was back up by nine late in the third quarter before settling for a 79-74 lead.

Brooklyn held the lead until Kidd tied it a 91 on a 3-pointer with 4:01 to play. The Nets lost a potential go-ahead basket when Blatche's tip in was ruled an offensive violation, and Anthony tipped in his own miss to give New York a 93-91 edge with 2:47 to play.

The Nets tied it again at 95 when Wallace ? who just moments before had banged knees hard with J.R. Smith and could barely stand ? tipped in a miss. Two free throws by Anthony followed by Joe Johnson's basket set the stage for Kidd's go-ahead shot.

NOTES: At a ceremony Tuesday afternoon, a flagpole from Ebbets Field was dedicated outside Barclays Center. Sharon Robinson, daughter of Dodgers Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson, took part in the ceremony, as did Stackhouse, who wears Robinson's No. 42. The flagpole had been donated to a local VFW post after the stadium was demolished in 1960 and remained at that site until Nets part-owner Bruce Ratner, the Barclays Center developer, obtained it in 2007 with the plan of bringing it here. "I think that's a beautiful connection to Ebbets Field," Robinson said. "To imagine this flying over Ebbets Field and that the Brooklyn Dodgers being so much part of that history, to have this plaque will remind them that the Brooklyn Dodgers were here and made such a difference in the community and now we have the Brooklyn Nets." ... The Knicks play their next six games at home starting Thursday against the Lakers. They host the Nets on Dec. 19 and don't go back on the road until opening a three-game trip against the Lakers in Los Angeles on Christmas.

More than 12,000 protest Michigan "right-to-work" laws

LANSING, Michigan (Reuters) - More than 12,000 workers from throughout Michigan and the U.S. Midwest crowded into the state Capitol and marched outside in freezing temperatures on Tuesday as the legislature began debating a "right-to-work" law restricting unions in a stronghold of organized labor.

Michigan State Police Inspector Gene Adamczyk said the Capitol building was closed to visitors when it reached capacity of 2,200. An estimated 10,000 people demonstrated outside.

Protesters lined the railings of the inner rotunda of the Capitol in Lansing as the Republican-majority Michigan House of Representatives began debate on a law that would strike a heavy blow against unions by prohibiting them from compelling workers to be members and pay dues.

The pro-union forces earlier had chanted "Hey hey, ho ho, right-to-work has got to go," and "What's disgusting, union busting," inside the building where police had arrested eight protesters last Thursday as Republicans gave preliminary approval to the laws.

Supporters of the right-to-work legislation also were inside the Capitol and on the grounds nearby, although they were heavily outnumbered by opponents. Security was tight with police dressed in riot gear, carrying long batons and with spray canisters on their belts.

Outside, where a nearby bank sign showed the temperature at 25 degrees Fahrenheit (-4 Celsius) and light snow fell, four inflatable rats dubbed the "Rat Pack" depicted Republican Governor Rick Snyder and the party leaders who have led the right-to-work effort.

A man dressed as Santa Claus stood on the Capitol steps holding a sign saying that Republicans had stolen Christmas.

The show of force by unionized workers recalled huge rallies in Wisconsin two years ago when Republicans voted to curb public sector unions.

Several school districts in Michigan were closed as teachers went to Lansing to join the rallies.

Jen Penz, a union steward for teacher aides at Warren Consolidated Schools, said 260 teachers called in sick there, forcing schools to close in the district near Detroit.

"We're not abandoning our students. We're here to protect their future," Penz said. "We're setting a good example for them.

Ann Patnaude, deputy state director for Americans for Prosperity and a supporter of right-to-work, said many people are confused about the issue.

"The unions are still going to be around," she said. "There's still going to be collective bargaining. This is about freedom, the right to choose."

The bills under consideration by the Republican-controlled Michigan House of Representatives on Tuesday would cover private, and public sector unions, except for fire and police. Snyder has pledged to sign the bills quickly.

The right-to-work movement has been growing in the United States in recent years. Indiana earlier this year became the first state in the industrial Midwest to approve right-to-work and several other states are watching the Michigan action closely.

Michigan would become the 24th state to enact right-to-work provisions. Passage of the legislation would be a stunning blow to the power of organized labor in the United States, which has suffered a series of setbacks in recent years.

Wisconsin Republicans in 2011 passed laws severely restricting the power of public sector unions. While Wisconsin did not even attempt to pass right-to-work, the success of Republicans there in curbing powerful unions such as teachers and state workers emboldened politicians in other states to follow suit.

UNION HOTBED

Michigan is home of the heavily unionized U.S. auto industry, with some 700 manufacturing plants in the state. It is also the birthplace of the United Auto Workers, the richest U.S. labor union. Michigan has the fifth highest percentage of unionized workers in the United States at 17.5 percent.

While new Michigan laws would not be expected to have much immediate impact because existing union contracts would be preserved, they could eventually weaken the UAW, which has already seen its influence wane in negotiating with the major automakers.

Right-to-work laws typically allow workers to hold a job without being forced to join a union or pay union dues.

President Barack Obama waded into the debate during a visit to the Daimler Detroit Diesel plant in Redford, Michigan, on Monday, criticizing the Republican right-to-work effort.

"What they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money," Obama said.

Labor leaders such as UAW President Bob King say they were blindsided by Snyder, who last Thursday announced he was supporting right-to-work after nearly two years of saying the issue was too divisive.

King was unsuccessful in more than a week of talks with Snyder and his staff in staving off the right-to-work push by the Republicans, who will lose several seats when newly elected members take their seats in the Michigan House and Senate in January.

Detroit area is headquarters for General Motors Co, Ford Motor Co and Chrysler, which is majority owned by Fiat SpA.
